Programs intended to help rural Australians have been eroded, according to the mayor of Mt. Isa, which is 1,900 km northwest of Brisbane, and whose population has fallen about 33% since 1980 to just 21,000. Many workers in Mt. Isa actually live elsewhere, and fly home each weekend to spend their money. But mine developers say that many recruits stipulate that they will only sign on if they can live on the coast.
