Time Warner, EMI execs drum up support for deal

Time Warner Inc and EMI Group of the UK are rallying support for their 50- 50 merger that will form an estimated $20-billion operation. Warner and EMI reaped a total of $7 billion in sales in their recorded music operations in 1999, while their music publishing divisions added $1 billion in sales. The two companies intend to cut expenditures by $400 million in three years and improve sales over the Internet.

Musical merger creates royal flush

Time Warner Inc has announced in Jan 2000 that it is merging its music group, Warner/Chappel Music Inc, with EMI Group to create Warner EMI Music. The new company will be the largest record and music publishing firm in the world, owning or controlling over two million songs. In 1999, Warner/Chappel posted a $537-million revenue from music publishing, while EMI had $551 million. Together, they will account for 20% of music publishing revenue in the world.

EMI Records Ltd of the UK and Time Warner Inc will combine their music operations to form Warner EMI Music. The merger follows the acquisition of Time Warner by America Online and is expected to create a boost in the proliferation of Internet music. Warner EMI Music, which have combined revenues of over $8 billion in 1999, will feature such artists as The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Phil Collins, Madonna, Eric Clapton, Janet Jackson, Jewel, Garth Brooks and the Spice Girls.
