Fuel efficient cars on way - someday
Article Abstract:
Detroit automakers promised at a press conference attended by Vice President Al Gore to manufacture more fuel-efficient cars and trucks. The pledge, however, seemed to depend on whether Congress will grant a $3,000 tax credit on buyers of fuel-efficient vehicles. Of the three, Ford Motor appeared to the most serious, pledging to mass produce family-oriented cars in 2003 that will be powered by hybrid powertrains.

Tire concerns go back 1 1/2 years before recall
Article Abstract:
Employees of Ford Motor Co, one the top users of tires manufactured by Bridgestone/Firestone Inc, have been aware of the problems of the Firestone tires since Jan 1999. They have, in fact, raised serious questions about the quality of the tires, as well as the tiremaker's integrity as shown in several Ford documents. Aware that the tires have some defects, the automobile manufacturer began free replacement of Fierstone tires in Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries in Jul 1999. It also started using Goodyear tires in Venezuela in May 2000. These efforts, however, did not stop several accidents and deaths from happening in the US and Venezuela that involved Ford vehicles fitted with defective Firestone tires.

GM may declare end of the road for Prizm
Article Abstract:
General Motors may discontinue production of the Toyota-based Chevrolet Prizm because it competes with its other small cars. Chevrolet general manager John Middlebrook states that there is no plan for a new generation Prizm as well as no long term plans for the model in the Chevy lineup. If GM follows through on the plan, it would be a major blow to the NUMMI manufacturing plant, its joint venture with Toyota in Fremont, CA. Since Prizm is the only GM model being built at NUMMI, dropping its production would mean that the automaker will not have anything to build at the plant, which is being managed by Toyota.
