U.K. travel giants Thomas Cook, Carlson merge

United Kingdom-based Thomas Cook Group and United Kingdom-based Carlson Companies Inc., two leading travel agencies, plan to combine their respective operations in a proposed merger deal that will have an impact on the two firms' retail businesses in Canada. The proposed merger deal between Thomas Cook and Carlson calls for the combination of the international financial-service and leisure-travel operations of Thomas Cook with majority of the leisure and travel operations of Carlson. The planned merger deal is also expected to spur greater specialization and consolidation in the Canadian travel services sector.

Mark's, Levi Strauss launch casual clothing store chain

Mark's Work Wearhouse Ltd., a Calgary, Alberta-based casual clothing retailer, is teaming up with Levi Strauss & Co. Canada Inc. to open Dockers stores in Canada. The stores will be 100-percent owned by Mark's and will carry Levi's Dockers brand. Mark's intends to have four test stores in such major markets as Toronto, Ontario, and Calgary in 1999 and in the next five years, it hopes to have a minimum of 150 stores, with an average area of 3,000 sq ft. The new Dockers stores will be added to the Mark's Work Wearhouse and Mark's Work World stores.

Royal Airlines, Signature cut deal
Article Abstract:
Montreal, Quebec-based Royal Airlines and Signature Vacations of Toronto, Ontario, have made a deal, which would give Royal an annual revenue of C$200 million. Royal Airlines will become Signature Vacations' primary carrier for flights to the US, Latin America and the Caribbean. Royal has also been chosen as the main carrier to Signature's flights to Florida, Hawaii and Europe as well as 19 Canadian destinations. Meanwhile, Signature Vacations has also agreed to acquire Royal Vacations, a tour subsidiary of the the carrier, for C$3 million.
