Plans to link a household's appliances to the Internet and personal computers seem to have met with resistance from consumers, who do not perceive the increased cost of such appliances as a good value. LG and Acer Computer, for example, still hope to offer web-linked phones, refrigerators, microwave ovens, etc, but makers such as Sony, Netpliance and Gateway have curtailed their efforts in this area.

Travel agents may be replaced by Internet services that permit users to make their own travel arrangements. Web sites such as Travelcity and Travelweb permit individuals to reserve airline flights, hotel rooms, automobile transportation, and to purchase tickets to entertainment. Microsoft plans to offer sites for car and real estate purchases through its proposed Expedia service.
