Welcome to the new Bell
Article Abstract:
Ameritech Corp.'s acquisition of a 20% interest in Bell Canada for C$5.1 bil bolsters BCE Inc's plans of outflanking its competitors in Canada by establishing a continental partnership. Montreal, Canada-headquartered BCE, the parent of Bell Canada, intends to be at par with big phone companies that include Germany's Deutsche Telekom AG, AT&T Corp and BT PLC of the UK. BCE CEO Jean Monty stresses that Ameritech, which is double the size of BCE, will become bigger once the latter completes its merger with San Antonio, TX-based SBC Communications Inc.
