Whales on the right track: the southern right whale is making a sexy comeback
Article Abstract:
The southern right whale population in 1999 is on a path to reach in 2050 what it was in 1820. The population in 1820 was 25,000, but intense whaling reduced that number to less than 100 by 1860. 1999 estimates are about 1,000. The whales are sexually active and the southern mating breeding grounds, bounded by the Australian coast and Antarctica, are marked by little pollution and light shipping traffic.
