When it's time to pay the piper electronically
Article Abstract:
Intuit Inc's new $69.95 Quicken 4.0 for Macintosh personal finance software adds stock, bond and mutual-fund portfolio management and financial planning features to its existing checkbook management and income-tax information gathering capabilities. Other enhancements include a quick-fill feature that automatically completes entries as they are typed in, based on previously entered information. Quicken reminds users of recurrent bill due dates, and can even generate checks for all bills due on a particular date automatically. The new Quick Zoom feature retrieves background entries for suspiciously large totals. Also new is the ability to convert numbers into three-dimensional graphs and charts with ease. Intuit even offers its own Visa Gold credit card and ships all transactions in Quicken-ready format over Compuserve or on floppy disk. Owners of previous versions can upgrade for $34.95.

Borland's new offering: worth the wait?
Article Abstract:
Borland International Inc is finally shipping its long-delayed Paradox for Windows data base management system (DBMS). Earlier users applaud the product for its ease of use and powerful development environment. The product is shipping none too early for Borland, which has seen Microsoft Corp grab a big lead in the Microsoft Windows-based DBMS market with its Access for Windows. Hundreds of thousands of copies of Access have sold for the introductory price of $99, but industry analysts are not sure if businesses are merely evaluating the product or if they actually plan to use it. For its own part, Borland cannot assume that the popularity of its DOS-based Paradox will translate into automatic success in Windows. Paradox for Windows lists for $795, but through at least Apr 30, 1993, it will have a special price of $139.95.
