A multimedia education: computers are razzling and dazzling the imaginations of students
Article Abstract:
Multimedia technology, which has become miniaturized, is now feasible and affordable for use in schools. This is so because microcomputers can now be used with compact disc-read only memory (CD-ROM). The Multimedia Marketing Council (MPC) has established a multimedia-products standard. Products that conform to the standard can be identified by an MPC logo. CD-ROM libraries of information can themselves be used as material for constructing multimedia lessons. Even teachers who are not especially computer literate can use authoring software to create such lessons. Toolbook, $395, from Asymetrix Corp, is used by both professional and nonprofessional program developers. Action, $495, from Macromind/Paracomp, is a new program on the market that comes with an instructional videotape. Both Toolbook and Action are easy for beginning users but also offer enough power for professional users.

Managing systems with thousands of users
Article Abstract:
Banyan Systems Inc introduces ENS for Netware, a network operating system designed to provide network managers with a means of building and maintaining an enterprise-wide network. ENS for Netware costs $3,995, plus an additional amount that depends on the number of users: $295 for five users, $3,495 for 250 users. Novell Inc's Netware is designed for smaller local area networks (LANs) of up to 250 users, while Banyan's original network operating system, Vines, is designed for enterprise-wide networks. Vines allows the network manager to control a company-wide network fairly easily from a single location. ENS for Netware brings the capability of tracking multiple LANs to Netware-based LANs. Novell has announced that it will support ENS for Netware, in keeping with the company's policy of encouraging interoperability and cooperation.
