Why play national anthems anyway?

The furor over Denver Nuggets guard Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf's unwillingness to stand during the playing of the US national anthem calls attention to the fact that the practice of playing patriotic songs before sporting events is anachronistic. The practice should be abandoned.

The French Open comes of age

The French Open tennis tournament, which is played in late May and early June each year at the Roland Garros facility in Paris, is extremely popular with tennis fans. The play is more interesting to watch since graphite racquets were allowed in competitions.
