Yukos CEO, politics a volatile mix

Mikhail Khodorkovsky the head of Russia's largest company OAO Yukos in February 2003 at a regular meeting between Russian business leaders and officials from President Vladimir Putin's government directly criticized the President suggesting that his administration was corrupt. Khodorkovsky was tired of watching the creeping return of authoritarianism in Russia and decided to use his resources to fight it by buying a newspaper and funding opposition parties.

Russian markets take tumble on the arrest of oil magnate
Article Abstract:
The Russian currency and stock markets plunged on October 27, 2003 on the arrest of the Russian oil business leader and CEO of OAO Yukos, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, for fraud and embezzlement. Vladimir Putin, the Russian President, has asked the public to remain calm over the arrest and revealed that he would not entertain any meeting or bargaining to free Khodorkovsky.
