Edison Electric Institute: the first 60 years
Article Abstract:
The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) was formed as a trade association of investor-owned electric power companies on Jan 12, 1933. Its intent was to foster research, gather statistical information about the electric industry, and had a requirement that member companies comply with standards for disclosure. EEI was a successor to the National Electric Light Association, which was involved in controversy at the beginning of the Depression of the 1930s, concerning its public relations activities and investor losses. Among the more recent efforts of EEI has been encouragement of development of emergency assistance arrangements among utilities, as well as establishment of an electronic bulletin board for utilities in EEI's Rapid Information System Exchange (RISE) program. The organization also supports promotional efforts, deals with governmental relations, and other activities.

EMF: the process of dialogue
Article Abstract:
Unsettled questions about effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) on human health must be acknowledged and dealth with by electric utilities. The controversy continues to gain media and public attention. Some scientific studies have found a correlation between exposure to EMF and incidence of cancer and leukemia, while other studies have not. More conclusive research is needed, and utilities should conduct opinion research to discover their customers' attitudes and depth of knowledge on the subject. In a survey of electic utilities by Edison Electric Institute, it was revealed that almost all of the respondent utilities carry out free measurements of magnetic fields at homes, offices, etc. EMF policy statements are in place or being developed by 84% of respondents.
