Exploding the trade in mines
Article Abstract:
The extensive damage cause by anti-personnel mines has made obvious the need to put an immediate end to their use. Mines have destroyed vast tracts of land, maimed and killed innumerable civilians and nearly ended all possibility of life in places. The physical and psychological damage is likely to have a long-term impact. The UN estimate that 800,000 mines have been laid in former Yugoslavia suggests the enormity and urgency of the problem. Among the various solutions being suggested are an international ban on manufacturing and export of mines or, alternatively, a ban on certain types of mines.

The reality gap
Article Abstract:
Advanced technology applied to weapons design has not led to shorter, less violent wars. Conventional weapons are more available than ever before. Most armed conflicts are increasingly local and for immediate aims, such as loot, territorial control, and revenge. The International Committee of the Red Cross has noted that rape and other brutal acts are more central to war in recent years. Superpowers are increasingly concerned with internal demands and are more reluctant to take on a peacekeeping role.
