The flooding of a nation
Article Abstract:
Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba are planning hydroelectric projects in the Hudson Bay are that will devastate wildlife and the Cree Indians' way of life. The largest project, James Bay II, is an expansion of a Hydro Quebec project that flooded 30,000 sq km of Cree hunting grounds. The Cree and US environmental groups have sued Hydro Quebec and the Canadian government for evading environmental regulations. Opponents of the projects believe they will waste water and energy. Contracts with US states for electricity are at stake.

In hot water
Article Abstract:
Britain's water shortage remains acute, with environmentalists calling for water policy reform, and 20 million water users facing rationing. Britain has met its 70 percent increase in consumption since 1960 by depleting convenient groundwater sources. Now dry summers, dry rivers and the unwillingness of newly privatized water companies to reform their methods are combining to exacerbate the shortage.

Burning issues
Article Abstract:
As Great Britain runs out of landfill space, it looks toward incineration as a means of waste disposal. However, incineration causes excessive air pollution and most European countries are turning away from it. Plans to expand incineration will also conflict with new European Community regulations which will be harsher than present British rules.
