Waiting for the call
Article Abstract:
The electric industry has yet to fully reap the benefits of automated meter reading (AMR). Despite its advantages, which range from cutting costs for hard-to-read meters to its being ideal in hourly data and load profiling, electric utilities have yet to warm up to AMR for a number of reasons. The technology was developed in a regulated environment which made it easy to test new innovations. AMR would have difficulty thriving in a deregulated industry because costs and margins are given more attention. So far, less than 6% of the the 100 million electric meters in the US use AMR.
