Asthma therapy for the 21st century
Article Abstract:
A symposium on asthma therapy development for the 21st century was held at the National Heart and Lung Institute, London, UK. It highlighted current therapy consisting of beta-2-adrenoceptor agonists, theophylline and glucocorticosteroids and efforts to develop new anti-inflammatory therapy for asthma. There is an ongoing development of a second generation theophyllines that inhibit phosphodiesterase to lessen side effects while retaining its beneficial action.

NF-kB: a pivotal role in asthma and a new target for therapy
Article Abstract:
The prevalence and morbidity of asthma, a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways, have been increasing. Studies have shown that many of the stimuli that heighten inflammation in asthmatic airways lead to the activation of NF-kB, a factor that plays an important role in immune and inflammatory responses. The inhibition of NF-kB should present a new focus for the development of new anti-inflammatory drugs for asthma.

Reply: 5-HT(sub)1A receptors and control of airways
Article Abstract:
This article discusses the role of 5-HT(sub)1A receptors in inducing anti-asthmatic effect. Results suggest that intravenous administration of receptor antagonists cause bronchodilation of the obstructed airways.
