GERMANY: GROWTH FOR PLASTICS INDUSTRY IN 2000

According to Manfred Schneider, chairman of Bayer AG and president of the German chemical industry association VCI, the German plastics industry saw a 5% increase in production to about 15mn tonnes in year 2000. Capacity utilisation was high at all production plants. The industry's exports increased 10%, while imports are estimated to have grown by 5.8%, raising foreign trade surplus by more than 20%. As a result of higher volume and higher prices, turnover surged by more than 20%. The development of profitability was less positive.

Germany: Plastic industry revises forecast downwards
Article Abstract:
GKV, the German plastics industry association, has revised its growth forecast for 2001. It now predicts a growth rate of 2-2.5%, while in February it had expected a 5% growth. In 2000 the German plastic processing industry generated a turnover of EUR 40.3bn. In the first half of 2001 sales grew 2.7% to EUR 20.4bn. The steepest growth rate was recorded in packaging materials, at 7.6%, while demand for construction products fell 2.2%. The industry reports a 6.5% increase in exports in January-June, while domestic demand grew 1.2%.

GERMANY: ALPHACAN OMNIPLAST TO CLOSE PLANT

German Ehringshausen-based Alphacan Omniplast GmbH is to close down its production plant in Bitterfeld by the end of year 2000 and transfer production to the plant in Ehringshausen. The subsidiary of Atofina produces plastic pipes and profiles.
