GERMANY: NUTRINOVA BETTING ON DIETARY FIBRE

German Frankfurt-based Nutrinova Nutrition Specialties & Food Ingredients GmbH is betting on research and development and alliances in order to expand in the markets for functional food additives. In September 2000 the subsidiary of Celanese AG signed a cooperation agreement with Opta Food Ingredients Inc. of the US for the exclusive marketing of Opta's Oat Fiber and Snowite outside the US and Israel. With the market for dietary fibre growing at double the rate of the overall food supplements market, Nutrinova is also launching Caromax, an insoluble roughage product that is said to reduce blood cholesterol. In 1999 Nutrinova generated a turnover of about EUR 120mn.

GERMANY: NEW PRODUCTION PLANT FOR ASTA MEDICA

Asta Medica, a pharmaceutical subsidiary of Degussa-Huls, is spending DM 46mn on a new production plant in Kunsebeck by December 2001. Cytostatic products will be produced at the new plant, which will include also production and aseptic filling facilities for injection products. The outdated plant in Brackwede will be closed. Over the past few years Asta Medica has transferred the entire production of active agents to the site of Arzneimittelwerk Dresden GmbH.
