ITALY/INDIA: ISAGRO EXPANDS THROUGH ACQUISITIONS

Caffaro, Italian Cesano Maderno-based subsidiary of the SNIA group, has sold its agrochemicals division to Isagro for EUR 90mn. Caffaro produces agrochemicals in Aprilia and Adria and has an R&D unit in Galliera. In 2000 the division generated a turnover of EUR 115mn. In a separate move, Isagro has taken over the plant protection agent division of the Indian company Rpg Life Science Ltd. Isagro, which emerged from the merger of the agrochemicals divisions of Montedison and Enichem in 1993, is the only agrochemicals company in Italy that carries out research into new active agents. The company has an annual turnover of about EUR 70mn. The acquisitions raise the figure to more than EUR 200mn.

GERMANY: AGROCHEMICALS INDUSTRY HIT BY WEATHER

According to Manfred Schneider, chairman of Bayer AG and president of the German chemical industry association VCI, the sales of plant protection agents in Germany were affected by adverse weather conditions in year 2000. The sales of growth regulators fell by 6.7%, those of insecticides 3%, fungicides 2.6% and herbicides almost 1%. Potash sales fell by almost 5%, while growth was recorded in the sales of nitrogen fertilisers, at 5%, and phosphate, at 3%.

Switzerland: Sustainable agriculture with Syngenta
Article Abstract:
Syngenta has budgeted about SFr 4mn to support sustainable agriculture in 2001 within the Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture set up by the Swiss Basle-based agrochemicals group. The support focuses on small farms to secure the supply of food and improve its quality. The projects include some in Eritrea, Kenya and Mali.
