A clash for control in the shipping lanes
Article Abstract:
In Dec 1995 fighting erupted between Eritrea and Yemen over control of the Hanish Is, which control a vital chokepoint in the Red Sea. The conflict runs against the friendly grain of relations between these two countries, but control of the unpopulated islands has remained unsettled for centuries, coming to a head only because a German company had begun building a resort there. A quick resolution seems impossible, in part because Eritrea wants a more general establishment of its borders affecting several other states.

Eritrea: in the eye of the storm
Article Abstract:
Rising tensions with neighboring Sudan are complicating internal strife in Eritrea and raising the specter of conflict along religious lines. The differences with Sudan arise out of the latter's status as a puppet of the National Islamic Front, while Eritrea espouses separation of church and state; mutual suspicion over border incidents and internal rebellion; a swelling tide of refugees; and Eritrea's close links to Israel and the US, both of which detest Sudan. Eritrea must achieve greater internal stability.

Watching over Africa
Article Abstract:
President George Bush's stated during the tour to 2003 that the first goal of the partnership with Africa would be to help establish peace and security across the continent. The Americans have therefore devised a three-pronged strategy of building Africa's security capability, acquiring basis and other assets on the continent, and intervening directly when American interests cannot be addressed in other ways.
