A writer narrates how he came to live as a foreigner in Nara, Japan. The travel writer relates the challenges as well as the benefits of not being able to understand local signs, newspapers, magazines and radio and television programs. He also notes the convenience he derives from modern gadgets that make things simpler and the trade-offs associated with living in a modern world.

The views of a foreigner regarding his decision to settle in Nara, Japan after a stint as a travel writer are provided. By settling at a rural community in a foreign land, one can distance himself from the modern amenities and technologies that characterize modern cities. Moreover, foreigners enjoy additional benefits such as mobility and the freedom to travel as they please.
