Beyond the chemical weapons stockpile: the challenge of non-stockpile materiel
Article Abstract:
The federal government faces enormous challenges in addressing the problem of buried chemical warfare agents and munitions. Since the US is an original state-party to the Chemical Weapons Convention, it is required to destroy existing chemical weapons and production facilities in the country. However, the Army projects that it will take until 2033 to complete and require 95% of the federal non-stockpile disposal program's budget to identify, recover and dispose of all buried chemical weapons. The program is estimated to cost $15.1 billion.

Security Council remains divided over Iraqi arms regime, sanctions
Article Abstract:
There are divisions within the United Nations (UN) Security Council over the implementation of a resolution that proscribed weapons should be eliminated in Iraq for economic sanctions to be lifted. Air strikes by the US and Britain against Iraq in Dec 1998 have been followed by a shift in the Iraqi view, and Iraq has opposed the re-entry of international inspectors unless there is relief from economic sanctions beforehand. There are a number of proposals from Security Council members which have been debated.
