Challenges of nuclear stockpile stewardship under a Comprehensive Test Ban
Article Abstract:
It will be necessary to develop innovative perspectives and processes as the US seeks to balance the need to maintain security, safety and confidence in the nuclear deterrent against its leading world role in arms control and non-proliferation. The key factor in determining confidence in the nuclear stockpile in the future will be the Stockpile Stewardship and Management Program. This specifies activities to maintain a high level of confidence that the nuclear stockpile will meet Dept of Defense demands. The US must play a leading role in boosting confidence in the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

Avoiding the 'Definition' pitfall to a comprehensive test ban
Article Abstract:
The Comprehensive Test Ban (CTB) discussions which started in 1958 have been plagued by doubts over a definition of a nuclear explosion that allows low-yield nuclear explosions, which places the possibility of reaching an authentic ban in serious doubt. The best solution is to desist from definitions, and rely on the CTB's and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty's (NPT) tradition of using negotiations, text, and objective to recognize the occurrence of a nuclear explosion.

Extending the NPT: what are the options?
Article Abstract:
The Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) completed 25 years in 1995 and as per the clause of the treaty the member countries will have to decide on the future tenure of the treaty. The options are to extend the treaty indefinitely, like most of the other multilateral arms control agreements, or to extend the treaty for another stipulated period after which it will come to an end. These and other options regarding the future of NPT is discussed.
