China: from democracy wall to the shopping mall
Article Abstract:
Chinese dissident Wei Jingsheng believes that China's transition to democracy is inevitable even as he laments the West's lack of initiative to help the democratic movement advance in the country. He cites Pres Bill Clinton's visit to China in Jun 1999 as an indication that the US is backtracking on its earlier campaign for human rights in China, and instead opted to support autocracy. Wei expects a slow pace of change in China because of the West's apparent lack of support for the pro-democracy movement in the country.

The Middle Kingdom on center stage
Article Abstract:
Chinese Communist Party official Qiao Shi expressed his optimism regarding the country's democratization. Full democracy is to be achieved by strengthening institutions such as the National People's Congress through which the people exercise their state power. He also advocates greater autonomy to give the people more control over their lives. Qiao Shi reiterated that China will not interfere with Hong Kong's political affairs and will abide by the principle of 'one country, two systems.'
