Dream on
Article Abstract:
An examination of the impact that any change in Iraq could have on the relative levels of independence and prosperity that the Kurds of Iraq have achieved since 1991. It is suggested that if there is regime change in Iraq, the Kurds, who through the influence of external forces have enjoyed de facto statehood since 1991, could effectively lose a great degree of the influence that they have enjoyed, becoming a mere provincial concern of a new Iraqi government. Also, there is the danger that Kurdish nationalism could draw Iraq's neighbouring states into a wider conflict as countries such as Turkey and Iran attempt to keep control of areas claimed by the Kurds.

Make up, or break up
Article Abstract:
The democratic process in Iraq started by the elections after Saddam Hussein's removal is threatened by an increasingly organized and active insurgency that the outgoing interim government is not able to defeat. It will be difficult to write Iraq's new constitution in such traumatic and disturbed environment. Realistically, only history will show whether in 2005 Iraqis make up, or break up.
