Environmental implications of energy policy in China
Article Abstract:
A review of institutional reforms since 1978, focusing on coal, hydropower, and rural energy, illustrates the role of government policy, implementation, and institutions in augmenting and abating the environmental degradation that can accompany expanded energy usage. Since then, three major themes in China's energy sector have been decentralization, the shift to liberalized markets, and internationalization.

The much debated Kyoto Protocol, world's most important energy and environment treaty, has finally come into force. The protocol departed from classic international environmental policy making as the negotiations linked several trade and environment issues in an imaginative deal.
