Environmental management standards, corporate strategies and policy networks
Article Abstract:
There is pressure on companies to ensure that they monitor the environmental impact of their operations. There has been a move in Europe toward shared responsibility between the private and public sectors in tackling this issue, and European governments are also seeking to involve companies in the formulation of environmental policy. Environmental management systems are a flexible response. These systems include the British BS 7750 and the European EMAS. BS 7750 was developed with the involvement of a diverse network, while the development of EMAS involved member states seeking to protect domestic constituencies.

Environmental NGOs in Brussels: how powerful are their lobbying activities?
Article Abstract:
Lobbying aims to improve the enviroment for legislation that favors commercial or non-commercial activities, and lobby groups may have influence, but lack power to make laws or ensure that directives are implemented. The European Environmental Bureau acts as a consultative body, while the Group of 8 is a focus of environmental activity. There has been some success in promoting environmental issues, but continued pressure is needed with the planned enlargement of the European Union.
