Ghana's encouraging elections: a major step forward
Article Abstract:
Electoral reforms and a strong opposition coalition highlighted what has been considered as Ghana's first transparent elections as it shifted from authoritarian to democratic rule. The establishment of an independent electoral commission strengthened the electoral process in its aim of conducting free and honest elections in the nation. The success of the election can also be attributed to the support of nongovernmental organizations, international donors and political parties. This is considered as a major leap of Ghana towards democratization.

The rise of election monitoring: the role of domestic observers
Article Abstract:
A significant change in election monitoring practices has been the growing trend towards domestic observation in transitional democracies. Patterns in domestic observation include the extension of the activities of domestic observer groups after the elections, common efforts towards citizen education, involvement in lobbying for electoral reform and growing cooperation among civic groups in engaging in election monitoring. Effective observation of elections by domestic groups can lead to enhanced political participation.
