International relations in a changing world: bucking the trendies
Article Abstract:
There has been a transformation in the theories of international relations from 1960s to 1990s, resulting mainly from the increasing economic interdependence of the world. Modern day realists are optimistic about the the possibility of peaceful solutions to conflicts, as the world is becoming increasingly interdependent. Matters of international trade and commerce have ceased to be individual and have become subject to inter-governmental regulation. There has been a significant erosion of economic sovereignty. The concept of balance of power has changed.

Suspicious and cautious
Article Abstract:
Jim Hoare, who was charge d'affaires at the British embassy in Pyongyang, North Korea, until he retired in October 2002, describes his personal experiences of the secretive world of North Korea and his attempts to find out how decisions are made there. It is suggested that part of the reason for the social and economic difficulties that North Korea faces is down to the fact that the government decision making process is so compartmentalised, with little effective contact between any of these departments, at least at levels below the very top echelons.
