Karl Brunner: in memoriam
Article Abstract:
Economist Karl Brunner, died on May 9, 1989. Brunner completed his doctoral thesis at the London School of Economics, and later studied at the University of Chicago. He wrote more than 200 books, papers and articles. He acted as an advisor to several governments and actively participated in the formulation of the policies of the Swiss National Bank. His successful career in economics spanned several decades. Most of his early life was influenced by the academic pursuits of his father, who was a professor of astronomy at the Swiss Institute of Technology.

Monetary policy in the new global economy: the case of Japan
Article Abstract:
Globalization has not weakened the effect of monetary policy in large countries such as the US, but may have influenced small, open economies that have free capital movements. Temporarily increased money growth rates until there is excess supply could reverse the Japanese yen's appreciation and restore competitiveness.

The foreign exchange origins of Japan's liquidity trap
Article Abstract:
Japan's liquidity trap cannot be solved through monetary policy alone. The concept of the appreciating yen must be reversed by the US and Japan anchoring the yen's value with exchange market intervention and monetary policy that recapitalizes or closes insolvent banks.
