NATO and Russian approaches to 'adapting' the CFE treaty
Article Abstract:
NATO's move to expand its membership has significant ramifications for the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty and Russia's idea of what the treaty's revisions would entail in the face of the impending expansion. The treaty, which was signed into effect in Nov. 1990, places numerical restrictions on tanks, artillery, armored combat vehicles, combat aircraft and attack helicopters for each 'group' in an area extending from the Ural Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean.

Our North Atlantic Treaty Alliance partners are decidedly cool on US plans to develop ballistic missile defenses. They remain committed to arms control as a diplomatic paradigm, generally seeing missile defenses as disruptive to hemispheric relations.
