Models and mentors
Article Abstract:
The influences of three countries, Hungary, England, and the US, and the people in those countries, are described. The first influence in life was a father who was a self-educated, talented, but generally unfocused individual who conveyed the value of ideas and creativity. Next came an teacher of Hungarian literature who advocated the importance of books, a tutor who communicated an appreciation of classical music, and numerous influential writers, teachers and colleagues.

Uncle Irving
Article Abstract:
An essayist and professor of literature describes the personal influence of editor, critic and essayist Irving Howe. Howe was always an incredibly busy man who often seemed to have little time for social graces, but he exerted great professional influence. The first books of Howe's that were read were 'The U.A.W. and Walter Reuther' and 'The American Communist Party: A Critical History,' both of which demonstrated Howe's talent for history and social criticism.

The flame and sparks of splendor
Article Abstract:
The profound influence of a maternal grandfater, Isaac Jacob Kleinhaus, is described. The grandfather was not only responsible for bringing the family from Poland to the US, and thereby avoiding the Holocaust, but his life also served as a spiritual and moral example for all. Three teachers and one student also deserve gratitude for their influence, as do the nine Greek muses and the poetry, music, and even scientific findings they have inspired.
