The new King of Jordan, Abdullah II, lacks political and economic experience, but has developed relationships with younger members of the ruling families of other Gulf states. The late King Hussein was a direct descendent of the Prophet Mohammed and a member of the family that expelled the Turks from what is now Saudi Arabia. Hussein benefited from his family's prestige and his charisma.

The political stalemate between the Israeli and the Palestinians during the summer of 2001 is examined, focusing on the bleak forecast that in this time the only two possibilities appear to be continued sporadic and deadly violence or full-scale war involving other countries such as Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.
