Pluralism and the Palestinians
Article Abstract:
Palestinian public life has a certain sociopolitical pluralism which can help consolidate its fragmented and incomplete democratic tradition. This pluralism is an extension of the variety witnessed in clan or tribal relations. Also, the Palestine national movement and the balance of power between various political factions with no single dominant authority have aided this pluralism. A democratic order is achievable in Palestine and, with the Oslo peace accord and the subsequent election of the Palestine Authority, democracy is likely to gather momentum.

Getting to Arab democracy: The promise of pacts
Article Abstract:
Many Arab leaders have hailed the adoption of new electoral laws, the reopening of parliaments, the establishment of new constitutions, and the holding of elections, which has prompted so much interest among scholars and policy makers is more apparent than real. The Arab authoritarians have responded to pressure for reform with only cosmetic changes and nondemocratic leaders deflect demands for reform by taking into account the interest of groups over which hegemony is exercised.
