U.S. arms sales to Taiwan further upset China
Article Abstract:
The announcement by the US of $550 million in new arms sales to Taiwan has further angered China, which immediately announced the testing of its latest inter-continental ballistic missile. However, Washington continues to work towards repairing US-Sino relations which were badly dented by the accidental bombing of China's embassy in Yugoslavia in May 1999. The US claims that Taiwan's status can be resolved only by Beijing and Taipei and is trying to keep out of the fray. A US report suggests that China will have 2,200 tactical fighter aircraft, 500 ground attack aircraft and 400 bombers by 2005.
