Second NMD intercept test fails; readiness review still planned for June
Article Abstract:
The planned US national missile defense (NMD) system was not successful in intercepting a target warhead in a test on Jan 18, 2000. The NMD system seemed to be operating correctly until the last six seconds before missing a target launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Problems with the NMD system will not affect plans for a deployment readiness review in Jun 2000. A third intercept test is planned for late Apr 2000 or early May 2000. In this test, the exoatmospheric kill vehicle will be able to receive updated information from the BM/C3 following separation from the intercept booster, as well as information obtained from its infrared sensors.
