Article Abstract:
There are cultural and political misconceptions alleging the uniqueness of the East Asian model of democratization. These misconceptions center around the argument that East Asian democratization is unique because it is not linked to economic modernization. It is asserted that East Asian democratization is different because of the importance it places on the collective interests over individual needs. A political impediment towards democratization is the general attitude regarding the demonstration effects of available models for political systems.
