The European Parliament and the 1996 IGC - a British labour view
Article Abstract:
The 1996 Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) should reform the European Union's procedures and structure to enhance democracy, clarity, and openness. It can replace the present tangle of treaties with a single document outlining the powers and limitations of European institutions, including more coherent decision making. The IGC must also address the problems of expanding the Union, and settle the conflict over the ultimate scope it should seek.

Lifting the burden
Article Abstract:
Voters in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland on May 22, 1998, will determine whether to accept or reject the multi-party agreement on the future of the country. This agreement could end decades of violent dispute between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland. However, some question the realistic hope of actually seeing Ireland without any form of tension.
