The fragile balance: John Adams on liberty and equality
Article Abstract:
John Adams, the second president of the US, considered liberty to be a quality which was due to man's intellect and not given by fate. He accepted the negative concept of freedom described by Sir Isaiah Berlin in which man is free only when there are no external influences of other men or institutions. According to Adams, liberty requires man to have the right to acquire property. However this right causes imbalances in the acquisition of wealth which by making men inequal might harm liberty.
