The stalemate north of Hokkaido
Article Abstract:
The Russian-Japanese dispute over ownership of four islands north of Hokkaido has overshadowed the relations between the two nations since the end of the World War II in 1946. Observers in both countries suggest that it may take another decade and the passing of the generation exiled from the disputed islands, before this issue can be resolved dispassionately as a nettlesome historical problem and not as the matter of personal loss and human dislocation that it has become.

A malign sense of sovereignty: Canada's debate over U.S. trade relations
Article Abstract:
The Canadian government, aside from some security measures, has taken no significant initiatives to broaden, deepen or safeguard its trade ties with the United States in the event of another terrorist attack giving sovereignty concerns as the reason. The doubt whether a customs union would benefit Canadians without being harmful to their rights is examined thoroughly and the indication is that the costs paid are minimal and the benefits are large.
