The trade and environment interaction in the WTO; how can a 'new round' contribute?
Article Abstract:
As environmental concerns are moving closer to the forefront of international trading policies, the need for the WTO to become an informed and credible participant in the formation of policy is ever increasing. To build public confidence in the WTO, the negotiating process needs to become more transparent and the organization must better interface with non-governmental groups.

Dispute cases involving a conflict between free trade and environmental concerns are often challenging for the WTO to resolve. Coherence of trade and environmental policy on an international level is necessary to better handle disputes of this nature.

Evidence indicates that trade liberalization can both negatively and positively impact the environment. As borders become more permeable, the WTO will likely become more attuned to the environmental ramifications of trade globalization.
