The travails of liberalism
Article Abstract:
The 1995 Russian parliamentary elections have demonstrated the nation's preference for communists at the helm, as also the political awareness of the Russian electorate. Further, they have highlighted the elemental shortcomings of Russian liberals. Since 1991, Russian liberalism has been vaguely narrow, economistic, and technocratic, and has failed to reconcile private interests with the public good. The Russian situation calls for a reappraisal of liberal forces and a deeper committment to democratic principles in order to garner support from the wider Russian society.

Stronger legislatures, stronger democracies
Article Abstract:
A new and arguably more fruitful way of thinking about how political institutions influence democratization, one that examines the capacity or power of specific offices is proposed, in particular, it focuses upon the strength of the legislature and its consequences for the advancement of democracy. The evidence shows that the presence of a powerful legislature is an unmixed blessing for democratization.
