Understanding the market economy: aspects of planning
Article Abstract:
The economic policies of the centrally planned economies of Central and Eastern Europe are attempting to change to market economies. In order to do so, the differences between these two methods must be understood. Centrally planned economies can be characterized in that production targets are seen as goals, price is not used as a signal of availability and industry cannot be reorganized through bankruptcy. These factors lead to a situation of constant excess demand, wasteful production methods, inefficient monitoring of production and a system driven by production rather than consumption.

Reforms in Eastern Europe
Article Abstract:
The economic and political collapse of the Soviet Union and its Eastern European satellite states was predictable and grew out of the system's design, but Eastern Europe has much to look forward to nevertheless. Elements of the collapse and their causes are analyzed, as are the reforms, which arise from many of the same causes. Price reform, privatization, re-education, free trade, and stability of the regional economic system are all critical to proper development, and together will permit prosperity.
