W.R. Inge: his vision of a new barbarian age
Article Abstract:
William Ralph Inge's views about 20th century's return to barbarism have a direct bearing on the civilization of the West, especially America. His thoughts on the decivilization of modern society are gathered in his 'Romanes Lecture' and 'Lay Thoughts of a Dean.' He fears that a third great war would plunge the world into another Dark Age. Signs of the Dark Age are evident in the 20th century, but society is reluctant to acknowledge them. The Nazi and communist atrocities, the popularity of banal sexual acts, and mayhem in cities are signs of a decaying society.
