Whaling: confrontations continue
Article Abstract:
Some species of whale are recovering in numbers, while others are seriously endangered. The International Whaling Commission is threatened by divisions, and Japan still hunts minke whales using 'scientific permits', while Norway also hunts minke whales on a small scale. There is a debate between those who would allow for sustainable whaling, and those who see whaling as wrong except where indigenous populations hunt whales as part of a subsistence culture. The debates on these issues may distract from the need to preserve habitats.

The International Whaling Commission: from traditional concerns to an expanding agenda
Article Abstract:
The jurisdiction of the International Whaling Commission has raised some a controversy at the annual meeting of 1994. The continued global whaling moratorium and a sanctuary in the Antarctic were the most remarkable results of the meeting. These measures were objected to by Japan and Norway. Illegal shipment of whale meat, the need to establish a fund and need for international observation of whaling activity were other contentious issues.
