Dream and suicide
Article Abstract:
Improved psychiatric training has allowed physicians to diagnose depressive conditions more accurately. A better understanding of the difference between 'harmless' and 'dangerous' suicide threats has also made it easier for physicians to prevent self-destructive behavior on the part of patients. One alternative way to monitor such behavior would be to interpret dreams, since the impulse to commit suicide is manifested in dreams. Using dream analysis, physicians can indirectly track their patients' preoccupations with death.

Emil A. Guthiel, M.D.: "Dream and Suicide."
Article Abstract:
Emil A. Guthiel's classic article "Dream and Suicide" remains valid 50 years after it was first published. While its emphasis on dream analysis in psychodynamic terms reflects the therapeutic approaches of its time, the ideas discussed in the article remain relevant in practice. However, because it predates the more electro-mechanistic approach to dream causation, there are relatively few references to chemistry or the use of antidepressants.
