A population study of low-rate smokers: quitting history and instability over time
Article Abstract:
Results reveal that few of the low-rate smokers maintain their consumption level and 36% retaining smoking status beyond 20 months compared with 82% in regular daily and 44% in occasional smokers. Data also indicate that low-rate and occasional smokers quit at higher rates than those who smoke daily, whereas established smokes quit and/or modify consumption.

Article Abstract:
A longitudinal randomized trail tested the self-determinations theory (SDT) intervention and process model of health behavior change for tobacco cessation (N=1006). Adult smokers were recruited for a study of smokers' health and were assigned to intensive treatment to community care.
