A process model for assessing adolescent risk for suicide
Article Abstract:
Researchers have constructed a process model which will allow health professionals to assess an adolescent's suicide risk. The model incorporates three categories of risk factor which combine to produce a working assessment of risk. Primary risk factors include the presence of affective disorders and the possession of a high degree of hopelessness. Secondary risk factors comprise personality disorders and alcohol and drug abuse. Situational risk factors include family dysfunction and the existence of life stressors such as family arguments or a change of home.

Suicidality and cognitive vulnerability to depression among college students: a prospective study
Article Abstract:
Research findings confirmed the hypothesis that suicidality is linked to cognitive vulnerability. Data from college students revealed that students with a low cognitive risk rating are less likely than students with a high cognitive risk rating to have suicidal thoughts. The research also supported the mediating effects of hopelessness in the link between suicidality and cognitive vulnerability, and the lack of mediation by other factors including suicidality or depression in the past.

Adolescent suicide risk today: a paradox
Article Abstract:
International statistics on youth suicide show a number of trends. Theorists maintain that the rate of youth suicide is increasing alongside improving quality of life. The statistics show that the increase in youth suicide is occurring only in some countries, and that the increasing rate refers mainly to young males. These findings suggest that experts should perceive adolescent suicide as an individual behavior set within the context of particular societal values.
