Analytic asymmetries and their discontents
Article Abstract:
The analytic setting is overflowing with relational asymmetries between the patient and the therapist, but the analytic setting is specifically problematic because of its inconsistency with interpersonal bonds among autonomous adults. The way to regularize asymmetry is to minimize its effect on one hand and address its requirements on the other. To demonstrate this at a theoretical level, the asymmetry of commitments between therapist and patient is discussed.

The boundaries of the analytic encounter: clinical and ethical dimensions
Article Abstract:
A Jan 1998 panel discussion on patient/therapist relations examined the importance of boundaries in maintaining a productive and safe environment. Transference interferes with the analytical process, and the resulting emotional issues may never be resolved. In contrast, boundaries allow spontaneity and concentration on treatment while protecting both patient and therapist from emotional tangents.
