Annotation: recent studies of giftedness in children
Article Abstract:
A survey of studies of giftedness in children suggests the need to develop a policy for education of the gifted. The majority of studies are small-scale and do not use controls. A number of longitudinal studies have found that gender expectations of the parents significantly affect gifted children's self-perceptions. Other topics include the role of environment and genetics, advanced language skills, self-regulatory learning, emotional adjustment and educational concerns. A developmental approach is emerging to correct the emphasis on high IQ.

Annotation: self-injurious behavior in children with learning disabilities; recent advances in assessment and intervention
Article Abstract:
Self-injurious behaviors seem to develop and worsen in school-age children who have severe learning disabilities or who suffer from certain other syndromes. The long term prognosis may be poor once the behavior is well-established. Increasing the ability of children at risk to communicate along with more traditional behavioral treatment may help. Using functional analysis before intervention may help but the literature has yet to be translated into practice.
